Dillan was sad and resented his dad who has one-leg, he avoided his mom when he could because she was sulky and his little sister rarely speak.
Then he got a dog and cat which he thinks were weird like is family, as they too resented each other. He enjoyed the antics of his pets until circumstances caused them to become friends.
This friendship helped Dillan to understand what it means to love and accept family as they are.
