CAT CITY by
NEIL NORMAN
A comic speculation on what happens when a metropolitan society devoted to hedonism comes under attack by upholders of morality. Can the louche, decadent and freewheeling citizens get it together to defend their home against a highly disciplined unit of Christian fundamentalist party poopers? With the help of an old flame, Livy - Cat City's most celebrated club DJ - assembles a motley crew of defenders from her criminal and not-so-criminal friends to make a stand against a terrifying battalion of heavily armed warriors.
An anti-utopian/dystopian satire it is populated by a gallery of roguish characters including a pair of professional hitmen, a trio of eccentric thieves and a small army of pre-teenage cutpurses. Unlikely alliances are formed and elaborate plans are made when it becomes clear that the ultimate aim of the invaders is not to clean up the Cat City but to create chaos in order to locate an absurdly valuable cache of artefacts hidden beneath it.
Imaginative, dark, funny, violent and liberally seasoned with movie and pop culture references, Cat City is - as one commentator put it - "like a graphic novel without pictures".
